F1 Drive London Elevates Kart Racing Realism and Drama with ZeeVee

F1 Drive London is a wildly popular official Formula 1 Karting Experience located under the Tottenham Hotspurs Football Club Stadium. It sports three tracks designed for drivers of all ages and abilities including the 180-meter Future Stars track, with eight turns for junior racers; the 360-meter Sprint Track, with nine turns for racers of all abilities; and the 500-meter 17-turn Super Circuit, which offers advanced drivers with the ultimate karting experience.

The Challenge

In addition to the fast cars and the elaborate tracks, the venue’s management wanted to deploy an immersive multimedia system to create a dramatic environment that provides racing enthusiasts and thrill-seekers with the most sophisticated kart racing possible. This includes offering spectators a way to view all the action via a state-of-the-art AV system that displays real-time race coverage as well as racers’ stats and competition data.

The adrenaline-inducing system, which captures and displays all the action from virtually every angle, was designed and installed by the integration team at Electrosonic, a global provider of pro AV system design and consulting services with local offices in London.

The ZeeVee Solution

To provide the highest quality video to be distributed with near zero latency, the decision was made to go with an SDVoE solution powered by ZeeVee’s ZyPer4K-XR encoders and decoders. These models deliver uncompressed 4K video from NDI cameras placed throughout the facility and custom resolution 7th Sence media players to Samsung panel LED walls and Samsung screens (between 55- and 98-inches) via HP Aruba switchers.

“The performance and durability of ZeeVee’s ZyPer4K-XR encoders and decoders were exactly what we were looking for to outfit this ambitious project,” Paul Jennings, commercial director, Electrosonic. “Add to this, we were familiar and pleased with the ZeeVee components including those we’ve deployed in the stadium itself, as well as the company’s support at all stages of project design and installation.”

The simultaneous racing action on the three tracks requires the quick switching of video content that enables spectators to view the races in which their family and friends are competing. ZeeVee’s software-based ZyPer Management Platform makes it possible for F1 Drive’s staff to do this on-the-fly with simple drag and drop operation, while also enabling the creation of multiviews to display several images on individual monitors and video walls. In addition, the encoder’s built-in scaling capability bypassed the need for separate video processors for the system’s LED displays.

The ZyPer4K-XR models also offered a durable design that can withstand the wear and tear resulting from the system needing to be taken down and reconstructed at various times during the year to accommodate the storage of the football pitch in the off-season.

“The whole facility is an amazing experience in line with Formula 1 and the mix of LED displays, video walls and monitors create a brilliant spectacle,” said Jennings.
